He begin study guitar at an early age. In the beginnig, he teaches himself to play it and, after a few years, takes some classic guitar classes at Filarmonica Pisana to look at music in much greater detail. At the same time he performs in several places of Versilia and get in with artists of many different styles, practicing different genres of music such as jazz, rock, classical Naples music and popular music.
He has lucky meetings with World Music Artists such as Paco De Lucia, John Mc Laughlin, Al Di Meola and Pat Metheny that extend his musical vision beyond the classic style sonorities. So, he learns the flamenco technique and improvisation, growing up to develop a personal technique directed to merge various guitar languages. He goes on with classical studies in Florence, under the direction of Great Master Alvaro Company, pupil of Andres Segovia, who sees in Stefano Russo strong artistic skills and introduces him the most advanced guitar techniques by his innovative method called “Musical biodynamic”.
The following meeting with Master Ganesh Del Vescovo is really decisive for him to determine his musical formation and to affine his guitar skills. At same time he goes to Spain to practise andalusian guitar technique with Master Manuel Lora and continues taking high training classes, quite apart with the previously mentioned artists, with the Master Oscar Ghiglia. Also works in italian theatres, radio and tv, together with various singers and musicians from the classical Naples music including Pino Mauro (with whom he shares a world broadcast tv season) and percussionist Giovanni Imparato. In this period he has a position as deputy director and teacher in classic guitar at Centro Musica e Cultura in Naples.
He recieves credits in many auditorium and theatres where he meets many important artists such as Master Franco Califano (historical singer, songwriter and poet of the italian music) and Master Hiroshi Tada, absolute leader of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokio from whom he recieves an invitation for a recital in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Italian Aikikai founding.
Founder of the innovative teaching technique MTD (Direct Transmission Music), he actually works as teacher and performancer in Italy, Europe and Asia. Recently,
Master Luciano Maggi, one of the greatest artisan of contemporary lute manifacturing, designed a Shaula limited edition guitar specifically devoted to Stefano Russo.
